The Grand Canyon and Monument Valley

I think I have been wanting to go the Grand Canyon for about as long as I had New York City.  We finally made it the day after Zion.  We were going to go to Bryce but when we woke up there was smoke in the valley we were camping in.

The back story to the fire was that when we got to the campground the owner said it was only 50 acres and it had just started.  Well, I was on Twitter and following it, it had ballooned to 8000 acres in just a day and really wasn't that far from us, 5-10 miles.  Being a mom, and a woman, my mind went wild as to what would/could happen.  Well, I think God answered my prayers for easing my mind by putting smoke in the valley because after that happened Chuck wanted to move the camper anyway, didn't want to be breathing smoke for another day.  And we'd heard that Bryce was also filled with smoke.  So instead of heading a bit north for the day, we packed up and went south.

Funny story, on the way to the Grand Canyon we had to stop for gas.  It was my 4th day without a decent cup of coffee.  I asked the guy at the gas station if there was any chance there was a Starbucks anywhere close.  He laughed at me.

Yet, another wild fire.  We got pretty good at telling the difference between fires and real clouds.

And an old wildfire, or its remains.
 YAY!!  Our destination!

We went to the North Rim (the South Rim is the more popular one and usually where you see the most pictures from).  This is a resident group of Buffalo, actually they're bred between buffalo and cows.  I don't quite remember what it was, but a long time ago they wanted to mix them for a good reason but decided that it wasn't a good idea.  Good story, huh?

AND the Canyon.

I don't think I have a picture of how high this actually was, but seriously, I'm not really scared of heights, but I was literally on pins and needles for the entire day.  Mainly because I didn't want to let go of the kids' hands but I wanted to take pictures.  I so badly wanted to climb up here, but I didn't want to leave both kids with Chuck and have him let go of their hands to take a picture.

Or visa versa. Let's just say there was a sheer cliff on both sides of this rock on only a narrow walkway on the other two sides.

Seriously, I wanted to out on this very pointy cliff.  Even though I would have to leave both my kids with Chuck, my himself, and then expect him to take a picture of me on it.  I got so far, but decided to turn around.  Mainly because I thought to myself (geeze, even those feelings of fear about the kids falling off the walkway are coming back as I write this!!!!!) if I mis-stepped and fell, or if the kids got a way because they're so quick, how many lives would be changed forever?  All because I want to go out on a cliff.  And at that point I turned around. Turns out Chuck was having the same thoughts and was glad I turned around.

We ate in the Tahoe.  A lot.

And yes, we went out on this narrow walkway.  It's very cool.

Here are some pictures from it.

She's looking down a sheer cliff.  Don't yell at me.

This was taking out a wedding site they have set up.  It's permanent, very private and super cool.  What a place to get married.

I had the camera on the ground trying to take a picture, and thank goodness someone with the same camera offered to take a real one.

After the North Rim we decided to head to Page, Arizona.  To keep Aaron occupied during the driving we told him to keep an eye out for Lightening McQueen and Mater because this part of the trip especially looked like the movie Cars.  It was fun for him.

We've been to a lot of Indian "reservations, but none like this one.  It was like it was a "real" one. This is basically where the Grand Canyon starts.

Then there was Monument Valley.

Look familiar??

And this is the end of Lake Powell.

 More another day!
